February 2015

Well, February 1st is Grandpa's birthday, so of course...
chocolate cake, candles, and little girls who adore Grandpa:

Then, Harriet went to her first cheer competition.
These are her best little friends, Ellie, Paige, and Alexis.
Finally, this school year, she has super sweet, adorable, fun friends!

They took second place!  The trophy was so big, they were so excited!  It's too darn bad there wasn't one for each girl.  But, they all got to hold it. I have never seen Harriet so proud of herself.  Cheerleading certainly isn't my thing, but it has brought so much to Harriet, I can't help but be incredibly grateful for it.

Then, it was Valentine's Day.  Harriet requested that we please make a dolphin shaped box out of a rectangular Amazon box.  Um, sure! No problem!  David and I spent a few hours designing, cutting, and taping, and voila!  A 3D cardboard dolphin.  Do not mess with us.  Complete with a mail slot for a blow-hole, and a secret velcro flap on the bottom for emptying out the treats.
Finishing touches: metallic pink wrapping paper and marker design by Harriet.
chocolate-dipped oreos with heart sprinkles? no problem
heart-shaped hairdo? a cinch
Mom at school all day for Valentine party? a given
cutest kids on the planet? pretty much. (no, seriously, this 3rd grade class is adorable.)
Harriet and friends, doing silly poses.
Valentine's day for the almost 12 year old? Awkward!  (She stashed 5 careful valentines in her backpack for close friends.  Let's not talk about it.)

This brings back a memory that was incredible, but also the source of much contention this year.  Harriet's school did an amazing reading project called "One Book, One School."  The entire school did a book club together, reading the book "The World According to Humphrey."  It's about a hamster who is the class pet, who can talk and write.  The grand finale of the book club was a HUGE party where they had a pet store bring a bunch of animals to pet, and they did a raffle drawing for a REAL hamster.  You got entered if you could answer questions about the book.  Every single one of the 800+ kids were convinced they would go home with Humphrey.  It was incredible, because nearly every child and their parents read that book, and nearly every single one came to the party.  I have never seen the school so crowded, but it felt so nice to be a part of our school and community and have everyone come out for something like a book!  (Okay, truthfully - they came out because their kids were convinced they would win the hamster.  Harriet was still convinced.  She did not win.) We had a 6 month discussion about getting a hamster.  Harriet finally settled on a "thanks for understanding that we can't have a hamster" gift in late July.  Whew.  Thanksalot Humphrey!
Stryder outgrew his cousins, Argos and Helios.
Remember that one time we drove all the way to Pajarito Ski Area, only to find that there wasn't enough snow to ski, so we drove back to ABQ and went to Explora? Then, Grace was tall enough to ride the bike across the tight-rope, but Harriet wasn't? And then, they built a house outside?  That was a long day.
More Harriet cuteness happened.
Then, we FINALLY got to go skiing.  With the Pecks.  They are good friends.  Grace and Kayla are best friends.  We are so grateful for them.
Oh, and more Harriet cuteness.  This was "dress like your favorite animal" day.  Since we were fresh out of dolphin costumes, she went as a striped cat.
Oh, and Stryder continues to be cute.  And funny.  And I still wear glasses when I drive.
But, I'm not nearly as blind as I used to be.
